Pirate Rogue Guide

Arrr! Matey!

It’s been over a week that Mean Streets of Gadgetzan was released and a lot of pirate action is currently going on. Although some were afraid of Pirate Warrior simply dominating the meta, we can see that counters have already started popping up. Keep in mind that these are the first weeks of a completely new set so changes are bound to happen and the meta is far from being established. As always I’m happy to be bringing you some of the more interesting, viable ladder decks !

  • #1 Legend Pirate Rogue – Rufeng (Twitter)
  • #1 Legend Jade Druid – JustSaiyan (Twitter)
  • #1 Legend Aggro Shaman – Jowen ( Twitter )
  • #1 Legend Reno Kazakus Dragon Priest – Savjz ( Twitter )

Every decklist is also accompanied by additional info on how to play the deck, how to mulligan and a few pointers. In order for you to pick up the deck and start playing right away.

Hearthstone Rogue

Warrior isn’t the only class that works great with pirates, several players were already tinkering around with Pirate Rogue, but this list was piloted to #1 Legend on Asia by “Rufeng”. The deck is very aggressive and should be played as such, it also includes some counter tech to facilitate the Pirate Warrior matchup. Rufeng had a 70% winrate vs Pirate Warrior.

General Strategy

It’s extremely important you establish early game board control. You want to remove your enemies’ board efficiently while developing your own, using tools such as: Backstab, The Coin + SI:7 Agent, or your dagger as removal.

However you cannot keep trading, you need to close games fast. Use Cold Blood preferably on a harder to remove minion to start pushing face damage. Close out the game with Leeroy Jenkins, weapon burst, chargers.

Mulligan

Look for a 1-drop pirate, having this in hand will allow you to play Patches the Pirate for free.

After you’ve found your 1-drop, look for efficient removal tools & creatures such as: Backstab, SI:7 Agent. Or keep other pirate 1-drops to curve out.

On the coin:

Keep Defias Ringleader, Edwin VanCleef, SI:7 Agent

Also keep Acidic Swamp Ooze vs weapon classes.

Notable Cards

Tip

Make sure you are maxing out your damage each turn, think about your following turn if you are daggering or not, missing “1” damage can be the difference between a loss or a win.

Hearthstone Druid

Jade Druid is a powerful Midrange Deck that will allow you to never Fatigue again. It uses the ramp effect (like most druid builds) to cheat the mana curve and to start flooding the board with Jade Golems, that become more powerful with each new spawn.

Decklist

Class Specific Cards
  • 0Innervate2
  • 1Jade Idol2
  • 1Living Roots2
  • 2Wild Growth2
  • 2Wrath2
  • 3Feral Rage2
  • 3Jade Blossom2
  • 4Fandral Staghelm1
  • 4Swipe2
  • 5Nourish2
  • 6Jade Behemoth2
  • 7Ancient of War1
Neutral Cards
  • 2Acidic Swamp Ooze1
  • 3Brann Bronzebeard1
  • 4Jade Spirit2
  • 5Azure Drake2
  • 6Aya Blackpaw1
  • 6Gadgetzan Auctioneer1
  Total dust cost: 6380

General Strategy

You are looking to survive the early game and stall to the mid/late game.

When facing aggressive decks, you’ll want to start developing your Jade Golem as soon as possible, even a turn 1 Jade Idol Golem spawn is fine, it will allow you to combat the board way better in the later stages of the game. Once you drag out the game long enough, you are heavily favored to win.

Versus Control you’ll have to keep the fatigue game in mind, you don’t want to be running out of Jade Idol copies, nor do you want to have your deck filled with Jade Idol copies when you are only 15 cards deep and have no cards in hand. You might want to hold on to those Jade Idol copies for a “miracle” turn with Gadgetzan Auctioneer or Fandral Staghelm

Mulligan

Look for your ramp: Innervate, Wild Growth , Jade Blossom.

When expecting Aggro keep: Living Roots, Wrath

If you have Innervate or Wild Growth, you can keep your minions. Just make sure you have something to play each turn, you don’t want to be skipping a turn with this deck.

Hearthstone Shaman

Is this the return of one of Hearthstone’s most dominant decks? Aggro Shaman used to be a powerhouse before the Doomhammer & Rockbiter Weapon nerf. The latest expansion: Mean Streets of Gadgetzan, might allow Shaman to become a dominant force in the meta game once again.

A few players already peaked at rank 1 Legend with it, including 2015’s World Champion Ostkaka who didn’t want to reveal the list because  “it’s too busted for the community to handle”.

However Jowen, an Australian Hearthstone player revealed his own list after hitting #1 Legend.

Decklist

Class Specific Cards
  • 1Lightning Bolt2
  • 1Spirit Claws1
  • 1Tunnel Trogg2
  • 2Flametongue Totem2
  • 2Jade Claws2
  • 2Maelstrom Portal1
  • 2Rockbiter Weapon2
  • 2Totem Golem2
  • 3Feral Spirit2
  • 3Lava Burst1
  • 4Flamewreathed Faceless2
  • 4Jade Lightning2
  • 5Doomhammer2
Neutral Cards
  • 1Patches the Pirate1
  • 1Sir Finley Mrrgglton1
  • 1Small-Time Buccaneer2
  • 1Southsea Deckhand2
  • 3Argent Horserider1
  Total dust cost: 5360

General Strategy

The deck feels a lot like the old aggro shaman: establish early game dominance => start punching your opponent in the face, but now with pirates.

In all seriousness though, you will need to establish early board control and this shouldn’t be that much of a challenge consider you are packing: Totem Golem, Pirate Synergy, Jade Claws & Spirit Claws.

Push as much damage as possible with minions, while still making efficient trades. When going into the mid- to late game count your damage cards like Doomhammer + Rockbiter Weapon, Lava Burst and the newly added Jade Lightning allows for some serious SMOrc potential.

Mulligan

Look for: a 1-drop pirate ( this will allow you to get a free Patches the Pirate into play), Tunnel Trogg, Totem Golem, Spirit Claws.

If you have a good hand you can keep Jade Claws.

Notable Cards

  • Jade Lightning: Deals face damage & summons a minion, that’s often already enhanced by your Jade Claws
  • Jade Claws: One of the cards that makes Aggro Shaman so viable, as it allows you to fight for early game board while developing an extra minion.

Hearthstone Priest

Don’t let your memes be dreams, Reno Priest is now viable. Thanks to Savjz, who made it to rank 1 Legend and actually stuck around for quite a bit using both his renopriest & renolock.

  • 3Brann Bronzebeard1
  • 3Mind Control Tech1
  • 4Twilight Guardian1
  • 5Azure Drake1
  • 5Blackwing Corruptor1
  • 6Book Wyrm1
  • 6Reno Jackson1
  • 7Chillmaw1
  • 9Ysera1
  Total dust cost: 12540

General Strategy

This deck shines the most when facing off against aggro decks, due to it’s heavy anti-aggro build: Dirty Rat, Mind Control Tech, Doomsayer,… but still has the ability to generate enough tempo to win versus slower deck archetypes.

You are playing for control of the board & tempo, starting turn 1. Make value trades and use your spells & dragon synergies to efficiently remove the board. Sometimes you might want to hold onto cards that will allow you to get some combos going f.e.: Pint-Size Potion + Cabal Shadow Priest, Brann Bronzebeard + Netherspite Historian / Drakonid Operative.

Mulligan

Look for your early game: Doomsayer, Dirty Rat, Twilight Whelp, Shadow Word: Pain, Northshire Cleric.

Always keep Reno Jackson, keep Acidic Swamp Ooze versus weapon classes.

Absolutely a mistake not to include Renolock on this list. You list Savjz’s Reno Priest, but fail to mention that his climb to legend was with Renolock first and foremost, as well as maintaining rank 1 with Renolock for about 8-9 hours on stream, and only after that did he switch back and forth between Renolock and Priest.

  • LuckyHipster / December 9, 2016 / Reply

You also forgot about Reynads renolock

  • Shamans still strong / December 12, 2016 / Reply

Tried aggro shaman today, from rank 15 to 10 easily, few losses against renodecks
