Top Legend Decks: February Part 1

Posted by Daydream 8 February 2018 in Hearthstone

My Greetings,

Jean-Baptiste “Daydream” Beeckmans, Coach and Manager of Sector One here, sharing with you some of the performing and creative decks of this starting season that reached top legend ranks. I am sure you might like to try some of these. This edition is a little special as the latest patch just hit the servers, so I decided to pick decks that haven’t been affected by the patch.

Today we are going to talk about :

Control Mage Rank 3 by HotMEOWTH (The Deck|Twitter)
Jade Druid Rank 5 by RayC (The Deck|Twitter)
Dragon Priest Rank 1 by Nicslay (The Deck|Twitter)
Murloc Paladin Rank 1 by JohnnyBambou (The Deck|Twitter)

Control mage, also called “Big Spell Mage”, has gained in popularity in the last weeks with Fr0zen bringing it all the way to the finals of the World Championships. This version was used by HotMEOWTH to reach rank 3 legend. Two examples of how strong this deck can be.

General Strategy :

Using multiple board clears and other tools such as Doomsayer, the plan here will be to control the damage income, until the late game, where massive cards such as Frost Lich Jaina, [Medivh the Guardian], Dragoncaller Alanna will shine.

Mulligan :

Always keep Arcanologist and Raven Familiar. If you suspect your opponent to be “Aggro”, keep Dragon's Fury. If you suspect your opponent to be “Control”, keep Frost Lich Jaina.

Notable Cards :

Doomsayer: Even if your opponent can deal with it, it will either cost  him a spell to do it, or it will absorb 7+ damage and gain you some time.

Dirty Rat: Can be used  to gain value and a taunt minion if you expect your opponent to have no minions or small minions in hand. It can also be used right before an aoe, or if you have a Polymorph ready in case something really big comes with it.

[Medivh the Guardian] : Can work wonders, especially since this deck is filled with big spells.

Jade Druid has been around for a while now, we have seen it played at a very high level in the world championships, or more recently by Dizdemon all the way to the finals of the GOCS IV. This version is the one played by rayC to reach Rank 5 Legend.

General Strategy :

The game plan might sound pretty straight forward : Build big Jade Golems, control the board, and kill your opponment. However, Jade Golems are not the only strong tools of this deck. Cards such as Spreading Plague or Ultimate Infestation, along with its ability to build a lot of armor really fast are what make this deck so strong.

Mulligan :

Always keep Wild Growth and  Jade Blossom. If you have at least one of those, you might want to keep Nourish. Keeping Oaken Summons will very often be correct.

Notable Cards :

Naturalize : Easy removal for big threats but with a side effect. Be careful how you use it, or use it to remove a threat and make your opponent overdraw with it.

Spreading Plague : Will save your life more than one time, especially when playing against aggressive decks.

Ultimate Infestation : Is the key card of the deck. It deals damage, gives you armor, makes you draw and builds board. Just be careful with overdraws.

Dragon priest, often played with it’s combo pack (such as this deck), has been seen several times in the top ladder places lately and has been used by Maverick to win the GOCS IV last week-end. The version we are looking at here has been played by Nicslay to reach Rank 1 Legend.

General Strategy :

This deck uses the dragons synergies in order to compete for the board early game while collecting the combo pieces such as : Power Word: Shield, Divine Spirit and Inner Fire to build a big minion and kill your opponent.

Mulligan :

Always keep Northshire Cleric, and Kabal Talonpriest. Apart from these, Netherspite Historian and Radiant Elemental are also great early game minions, so often it’s correct to keep them in your starting hand as well. If you have Netherspite Historian, try to keep at least one dragon so you can use its effect. If you suspect your opponent to play “aggro” you’re looking for Potion of Madness and Duskbreaker.

Notable Cards :

Potion of Madness : Most people use it to control the board, and that is a good use of the card, but keep in mind that you can use it later in the game along with your combo pieces in order to kill your opponent.

Twilight Acolyte : Is great to create a strong minion while making your opponent’s minion a lot less scary. The attack of your opponent’s minion will be reduced to 2, which will also give you the opportunity to use Potion of Madness on it.

Sector One Top Legend Decks February Part 1 Murloc Paladin by JohnnyBambou

Deck :

Class Specific Cards
  • 1Grimscale Chum2
  • 1Righteous Protector2
  • 1Vilefin Inquisitor2
  • 2Hydrologist2
  • 3Divine Favor2
  • 3Rallying Blade2
  • 4Blessing of Kings2
  • 5Call to Arms2
  • 6Sunkeeper Tarim1
Neutral Cards
  • 1Murloc Tidecaller2
  • 2Rockpool Hunter2
  • 3Coldlight Seer2
  • 3Murloc Warleader2
  • 4Gentle Megasaur2
  • 4Spellbreaker2
  • 5Bittertide Hydra1

Deck Code : AAECAZ8FAq/CArnBAg740gLjywKxwgKdwgKzwQLTvALZrgLTqgKnCK8H8gWn BdsDxQMA

Murloc Paladin was extremely strong last month with the pirate package, but remains extremely strong without it. JohnnyBambou proved it reaching Rank 1 legend playing this list.

General Strategy :

The plan here is to take the control of the board with the help of your murloc synergies and very strong spells such as Call to Arms. Once you have the control, you want to deal massive damage to your opponent.

Mulligan :

The deck contains a lot of 1,2 and 3-mana minions. Rather than aiming for a specific one, what you want here is a murloc curve. You aim for a 1-mana murloc and a 2-mana murloc. If you have them, you want to keep a 3-mana one, or a Rallying Blade if something needs to be removed early-game.

Notable Cards :

Sunkeeper Tarim : Will often be really strong, especially since most minions in this deck are “small”. You ideally want to make sure to have more minions than your opponent when you are going to play it. It can also be a very good way to deal with, or get past big minions.

Gentle Megasaur : Will adapt all your murlocs which can lead to insane damage or very advantageous trades to control the board.

Spellbreaker : Can help you deal with threats. You might want to sometimes keep it in hand to silence a potential big taunt and finish killing your opponent. Now it’s time to try some of these and try to climb the ladder. I hope you enjoyed this edition of the Sector One Top decks.
